Washington-Lee HER Club Gets Ready to Kick-Off Book Drive!

On Tuesday, Kieran, the head of the Washington-Lee HER Students’ Club, led another club meeting. They came up with some ideas and strategies for a successful book drive and generated ideas for additional fundraising activities. Their book drive will run from November 28th through December 19th. HER Book Fair at Barnes and Noble

At HER, we are very excited to announce that we are partnering with Barnes and Noble at Potomac Yard for a book fair! During the time of the fair, any books purchased for HER through the Barnes and Noble website or at the site of the event will be donated directly to the four libraries we are building in Pakistan in March of 2017. (Please note that these donations must be certified with a special promo code-- details to follow immediately.)

As always, we welcome any donations to HER and encourage everybody to consider purchasing a book for us on November 19th. A book is one piece in the grand puzzle of girls' education, a puzzle that HER intends to complete through our quality, sustainable libraries.

Alexandria Country Day School: Country Market 2016 Prep

For the past couple of months, Zoha and Hannah have been working with Alexandria Country Day School (ACDS) in creating a HER booth at the school's Country Market. The Country Market is a fall fair for ACDS students, including games, food, and more types of fun! This year, HER will participate by selling bookmarks and pencils, and by spreading the word about its upcoming projects and ways for people to get involved.

This past week, Zoha and Hannah led two bookmark making sessions with the students at ACDS. The bookmarks being sold are 100% student-crafted and handmade. Here is a quick peek into our last session on Friday, October 21st. Enjoy!

Meet Us!

Hi! Our names are Zoha and Hannah, and we are two high-school students living in Washington, D.C, USA.

Zoha's passion for girls' education developed when she made a speech on the topic in seventh grade. Since then, she has worked on multiple projects to learn more about why girls in developing countries face adversity when seeking education. One of these projects took place in Pakistan in 2014 through in-person interviews with Pakistani teachers, students, politicians, and policy makers; Zoha concluded her findings in a final research report. Although Zoha's work has been focused in Pakistan, she hopes to travel to other developing countries and conduct similar projects through HER.

Hannah's passion for girls' education started in eighth grade after hearing about Malala's story. She was determined to help girls in developing countries who were deprived of their education. She began researching the subject, watching TED talks about girls education, and brainstorming ideas of how she could help girls in developing countries get their education. Hannah then met Zoha, and the two shared their ideas and developed creative ways to provide educational resources to girls in developing countries.
